Zuiko

by Marumataen丸又園

Marumataen's top-tier matcha, ground from a blend of Asahi, Uji Hikari and Samidori cultivars grown within Kyoto Prefecture. Marketed for koicha (thick tea) use in formal tea ceremony settings.

Editorial verdict

The brand's premium pick and the only blend with named cultivars — a calm, low-bitterness profile aimed at experienced tea-ceremony drinkers rather than beginners.

About the brand

Marumataen

丸又園

Marumataen (丸又園) is a Uji-region tea wholesale house in Kizugawa, Kyoto — the Yamashiro district that supplies much of the raw leaf behind "Uji tea" branding. Founded in 1853 (some of the shop's own marketing rounds this to "150 years"), it opened a retail storefront in 1970 and began online sales in 2003. Stone-ground matcha sits alongside sencha and gyokuro in its catalogue, sold direct through its own webshop and a Rakuten storefront, with prices in the ¥570–¥5,940 range for 30–100g.
