Cooking Matcha

by Marumataen丸又園

A budget 100% Uji matcha bag sold explicitly for cooking and desserts rather than drinking — Marumataen's cheapest SKU by a wide margin.

Editorial verdict

A culinary-only powder, not a drinking grade — include it in the catalogue as the baking/coloring option, not as a tea-ceremony pick.

About the brand

Marumataen

丸又園

Marumataen (丸又園) is a Uji-region tea wholesale house in Kizugawa, Kyoto — the Yamashiro district that supplies much of the raw leaf behind "Uji tea" branding. Founded in 1853 (some of the shop's own marketing rounds this to "150 years"), it opened a retail storefront in 1970 and began online sales in 2003. Stone-ground matcha sits alongside sencha and gyokuro in its catalogue, sold direct through its own webshop and a Rakuten storefront, with prices in the ¥570–¥5,940 range for 30–100g.
