About the brand
碧翠園
Tea maker and wholesaler founded in 1867 (Keio 3) in Joyo City, Kyoto, which it describes as the centre of the Uji tea production region. Hekisuien says its Hana Yanagi brown-rice tea, sold under a registered trademark from 1923, is the origin of genmaicha, and notes that accounts differ. The company trades under its Tengu trademark ('Tengu no Uji-cha') and sells matcha alongside gyokuro, sencha, hojicha and genmaicha; it says its tea-ceremony matcha is ground on stone mills. It lists an Agriculture Minister's Award (農林大臣賞) in the gyokuro category at the 2008 Uji Tea Competition, and a 1988 Kyoto Governor commendation as a Kyo no Shinise (京の老鋪, long-established Kyoto shop).
