Harimaen (播磨園製茶) is an organic tea grower and processor in Ujitawara, Kyoto Prefecture, whose family history traces to 1858, when the second generation began clearing forest land to plant tea; the retail business was formally established by the fourth generation in the Meiji era. In 1972 a sixth-generation owner was sickened by pesticide exposure while spraying the fields, and the company spent the following decades converting its holdings to chemical-free organic cultivation, earning Japanese JAS organic certification in 2001 and USDA and EU organic certification in 2007 and 2009. It now farms roughly 7 hectares of certified organic tea in Ujitawara and sells matcha, sencha, gyokuro, hojicha, and genmaicha through its own webshop, alongside GLOBALG.A.P. (2022) and FSSC 22000 (2024) food-safety certification for its processing facility.
