Nakayama Kisshoen (株式会社 中山吉祥園) is a historic Yame tea producer founded in 1865 (Keio Year 1) in the Oku-Yame area of Kuroki-machi, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Now in its sixth generation under representative Nakayama Hiroshi (中山浩史), the company operates under the brand name 茶良 (Sara) with a mission to 'provide high-grade tea at reasonably low prices.' In 2013, Nakayama Kisshoen became Japan's first matcha producer to obtain HALAL manufacturing certification, enabling exports to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe — the company now serves 15 countries worldwide. In 2018, they added HACCP certification, and in 2024, organic JAS certification. Their matcha is made from shade-grown gyokuro and tencha from the Yame region, stone-mill ground to preserve color, aroma, and umami. Beyond matcha, they offer cold-brew teas, matcha paste (formulated for stability against heat, light, and acid), halal-certified tea bags, and matcha lattes. The brand also operates a café in Yame serving matcha frappés and seasonal drinks.
