Nakayama Kisshoen (株式会社 中山吉祥園) makes Yame matcha from shade-grown gyokuro and tencha. It uses stone mills to preserve color, aroma and umami. Founded in 1865 (Keio Year 1), the company is based in Oku-Yame, Kuroki-machi, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is in its sixth generation, led by representative Nakayama Hiroshi (中山浩史). Its brand, 茶良 (Sara), aims to 'provide high-grade tea at reasonably low prices.' In 2013, Nakayama Kisshoen obtained HALAL manufacturing certification. That enabled exports to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe; it now serves 15 countries worldwide. It added HACCP certification in 2018 and organic JAS certification in 2024. The range also includes cold-brew teas, halal-certified tea bags, matcha lattes and matcha paste made to withstand heat, light and acid. Its café in Yame serves matcha frappés and seasonal drinks.
