Shohokuen began making tea in Uji's Kohata area in the early Edo period. Its official history traces the business to 1645 and records recognition at domestic exhibitions. In 1915, it was selected as the sole maker for imperial presentation tea.
Its modern quality-control program includes JAS Organic certification, ISO22000, and FSSC22000.
