三星園上林三入本店
One of Japan's oldest and most prestigious Uji tea houses, founded in the Muromachi period (~1522). Located on the Byodoin Temple approach road in Uji, Kyoto, Mitsuboshien Kanbayashi Sannyu Honten has served matcha to shoguns and tea masters for over 500 years. Now in its 16th generation, it remains a single-location purveyor dedicated to authentic Uji tea culture.
Brand story
Established during the Muromachi period, the Kanbayashi family served as official 'Uji Tea Masters' to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and their matcha was used by the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu. The store deliberately maintains a single location on the historic Byodoin Omotesando street, refusing to open branches or sell through department stores, preserving the integrity of their tea heritage. The 2nd-floor Uji Tea Reference Room holds rare historical documents, tea utensils, and letters from the Edo period.
