Houkouen's company history says the Kitamura family began trading tea about 160 years ago in Joyo, Kyoto. The company says it handles harvest, manufacturing and sales from its own tea fields. Its timeline lists a new matcha room added in April 1987 and matcha sterilization equipment installed in March 1996, when it launched "clean matcha".
