Itoh Kyuemon

Founded in 1832 (Tenpo 3) in Uji Tawara, Kyoto, the historic Uji tea house Itoh Kyuemon pairs Edo-period tea heritage with modern gifts and matcha sweets. It offers one of Japan’s most widely recognized matcha retail experiences. Five ceremonial grades run from everyday usucha to hand-picked premium koicha.

Itoh Tsunaemon began growing tea in Tahara Village, Uji Tawara, in 1832. Generations refined their craft in Uji’s famous growing zones. The family moved to central Uji and incorporated in 1952. ‘Itoh Kyuemon’ combines the family surname with ‘kyu’ from the fifth-generation owner’s name. Online sales began in 2000. It now has over 300 products and partners with Shirakawa and Uji Tawara farmers. Five pillars guide it: originality, Uji tea culture, seasonality, food safety and customer-first thinking.
